There are places in Umbria that become iconic and authentic expressions of community, just as happens in Guardea: here, in front of the Tiber valley, among hills dotted with olive trees, stands the Castello del Poggio, an identity symbol for the entire population.
The Castello del Poggio is located in the municipality of Guardea and stands on a hill overlooking the Tiber valley, offering an extraordinary view that embraces upper Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany. Founded as an imperial fief, it was absorbed by the Alviano state in the 12th century; in 1232 it came under the control of Todi. There were several passages, and in 1495 Bartolomeo d’Alviano, who had been entrusted with the fortress, managed to resist the Tuderte siege, and in the peace treaty that followed, it was stipulated that the fortress would no longer be rebuilt.
Among the illustrious people who stayed here were Federico Barbarossa, Charles V of Spain, Cesare Borgia – who besieged it and gave it to his sister Lucrezia -, Filiberto di Savoia and Olimpia Maidalchini Pamphilj.

Guardea’s Poggio Castle has always been a symbol of prestige, wealth and security for our community. The same values we find in our extra virgin olive oil PDO Umbria “Il Castello”, an authentic expression of the territory and the local olive growing tradition.
DOP Umbria certification is awarded exclusively to oils that meet strict quality standards: certified geographical origin, defined cultivars and a production cycle governed by precise specifications. Our PDO extra virgin olive oil comes from Moraiolo, Frantoio and Leccino olives, grown in the percentages prescribed by the appellation and carefully processed to preserve all its characteristics.
From our certified organic and PDO olive groves, located in the hills surrounding Guardea, this year we have obtained a particularly excellent production of certified PDO Umbria oil.
The favorable climatic conditions and constant care of the trees have allowed us to harvest olives of great quality, resulting in an extra virgin olive oil rich in fragrance and perfectly representative of our territory.
The result is an Umbrian extra virgin olive oil with a bold character, featuring the typical herbaceous fruitiness and elegant bitter and spicy notes that distinguish the oils of this region.
